 +====== Campaign IX, Chapter 2, Finis ======

 +"The End of the Beginning"
 +
 +//Mid-Late Trisad, 1331 Avard//
 +
 +The town of River Crown had been founded by Sir Tyrn le Bouef.  He had hoped that the town would one day become a burgeoning trade hub, funneling goods from Janis Plains up through the mountain pass, and funneling gods from over the mountains into the plains.  Sir Tyrne fell in combat, his town nearly destroyed by evil.
 +
 +An old friend of Sir Tyrne's had been the man known as Caerne.  Though a warrior, Sir Tyrne's god place restrictions on what he could do and how he could fight.  His long-time friend Caerne had no such restrictions, but was smart enough not to rub it in Sir Tyrne's face.  When the time came to found River Crown, Sir Tyrne gave Caerne the pick of land around the area, and so Caerne founded his own farm hold with his second wife, his five children and their families, and his grandchildren.
 +
 +When an ancient evil brought forth the undead in terrible numbers, in the dead of winter, Caerne's Place was virtually destroyed, his children lost, and only a handful of his grandchildren surviving, as well as another old family friend.  The grandchildren, old enough to have children of their own, swore vengeance.  Grandchildren of an extraordinary man, they rose to become extraordinary, themselves, through the catalyst of their loss.
 +
 +Though the evil killed Sir Tyrne, as well, it was tracked to an ancient mining complex that had been hidden near the mountain pass for millennia.  The complex had been sealed for a long time, but evil had finally managed to escape.  The Clan of Caerne enlisted what aid they could, and wiped clean the complex -- at the same time ensuring the survival of River Crown by asking aid from the lands over the pass.
 +
 +The Clan of Caerne made friends with the short, reptilian kobolds, and with their help established a lucrative trading company that would work the mountain pass.  Kobolds mounted on coyotes made excellent runners, and a mail and ordering system was established.  The riches gleaned from the ancient complex served as credit for all those that would use the new commercial entity, called Maleah's Mercantile.
 +
 +River Crown has become the new seat for the barony.  The duke has charged the Clan of Caerne with safeguarding the pass, as well as restoring the mining complex -- not as a mine, but as a fortress and a redoubt.  The Mercantile has served to bring in extra revenues, and entice more kobolds willing to work for modest pay, as well as those peoples needing a fresh start in a new environment.
 +
 +Though Sir Tyrn le Bouef never saw his dream come to fruition, before the snows had melted in the winter of his death, his dream came true, thanks to the Clan of Caerne.

 +====== DM's Notes ======
 +
 +19JUN2010.  With David absent nearly two months from the campaign, and all of us playing random one-shots in the interim, we decided that the campaign was at a good stopping point.  We could continue playing 'one shots' for awhile, until the players reached 10th level, or someone comes up with a new campaign start.
 +
 +I made up Maleah's Mercantile; if the group gives me a preferred name, I'll roll with that. :)
