Campaign VI: Chapter One, Mission Four

The 24th of Vor, 1329 Avard: Mythika walked the streets of Kashin, asking strangers for directions, and learning more and more about the largest city in Rakore. He searched the city over for information on his missing cousin, Sky. The clan of elves that Mythika and young Sky belonged to was a small clan of elves, and very tightly-knit. In addition, Sky and Mythika were students together at Lok Magius, the only school of learning left to mages in all the world. And Sky was missing.

A day's worth of questions and inquiries, beginning at the Lyle House for mages, revealed much. Sky had not been seen for nearly a week. She had last been seen in the company of Leigh Cantor, who had died on the Night of Assassins. Leigh's brother, who had been seen with Sky after Leigh's death, was also dead – and the two Cantors had been buried next to one another in a small cemetery for the followers of Whalin, on the north side of the city.

Mythika spoke with Father Grimhammer of the Wolves' Den, the temple to Rahne there in Kashin. Father Grimhammer agreed to perform a service for Mythika that would allow the priest to speak with those who had passed on, for a brief while, if Mythika could arrange for the expensive incenses required, and purchase a much-needed riding horse for the Wolves' Den's stables. Father Grimhammer agreed to do it on the morning of the morrow, two marks after sunrise – but he was a very busy man, because of the preparations for the Great Hunt on the 26th.

Mythika checked in to the Lyle House for the night, and began preparing for the worst, even as a summer storm rolled in.

* * *

Ethos awoke with a gasp of air, as thunder rolled overhead. He was beneath a satin sheet, and heard two men speaking in the common traders' tongue. By the time he managed to get the satin sheet off, and see Zap struggling with his own satin sheet, the two men had left.

A single candle lit the room, and there was some sort of strange dust that rattled everywhere, for it had been sprinkled on top of the satin sheets that had covered the two of them. They were both naked, but whole, despite the horrible memories of the scrags both carried.

Zap was confused as could be, but Ethos' religious training left him better prepared for what had happened. The elven missionary figured that it must have cost over a quarter of a million silver to resurrect the two of them from the dead, and his curiosity was coupled with dread as the two of them dressed in nearby rough-fitting clothes.

One of the two men that had spoken returned, and introduced himself as 'the Bat'. The Bat was a thin slate with a bald head and thin lips, and his intelligence was a nearly palpable thing. The strange man told them to relax, and that he would be in the next room when they were ready.

Zap asked him if he were God, but the Bat replied no – just that a priestly friend of his had helped.

In the next room was information: bookcases, scrolls, maps, parchments, and more. A large draftsman's table dominated the study, and a fire crackled in the fireplace. Zap helped himself to the finger foods that were available, and the Bat explained his intent, as the rain fell down outside.

As a master manipulator of information and patterns, the Bat agreed with Zap's assessment of conspiracists in Kashin – but the Bat thinks the conspiracists are actually much higher up the chain. He's very much afraid of something, and doesn't want to reveal anything to them for fear of how high the conspiracy may go. With both Zap and Ethos thought dead by everyone but the Bat and his priestly friend, the elven missionary and the wolf of Rahne should be able to help him uncover the conspiracy.

He asked the two of them to travel to Mount Tessel, and look for the lost town of Grundun. Grundun had been located near a salt mine, and the mine was the whole reason for Grundun's existance. The Bat gave the two of them a copy of the only map to the lost town, and asked them to find out if the mines had been reopened – and if so, by who. The Bat indicated that time was of the essence, but he would give them until the next morning to leave.

The Bat also had some things for them that might help them in their travels. He had armor, weapons, and even a strange candle and a ring, in addition to whatever else they had had. Zap's items had been left in his grave, but the Bat's 'agent' had been able to steal Ethos' body with all of its stuff, without anyone knowing. -so ends the 24th of Vor, 1329 Avard.

DM's Notes

They're back! And now, because they're dead, they're the perfect spies! Of course, they have no idea what they're getting into. I told them point-blank that they're three levels short of where they should be, and two party-members down. The kid-gloves are off, too, so they're going to have to be extra cautious to survive.

XP Awarded

NONE. (total to date was 4,000, minus 3,000 for resurrection)
