'Defender' is the fourth of the seven ranks of the paladin. Defenders are often assigned as godly representatives of the church in combat. They tend not to lead armies, but instead lead smaller groups of independent warriors on special missions. They are often considered the highest rank of paladin that is still independent of church obligations (read as 'church politics').
