Maui

Character concept by Adam Montgomery, all rights reserved.

Priest of Olorin

“Consider it done.”

Date of Birth: Grill 11th, 1326.

Current Status: Summer, 1331 Avard. Maui is both bodyguard and priest for Commodore Seamus, and never far from his side.

Appearance

Maui is a powerfully built man of over six feet in height, with dark hair, dark eyes, and light brown skin from a lifetime in the sun. He tends to wear light, loose, flowing clothing and gum-soled boots for fast and hard action aboard ships. His shoulder-length dark hair is usually swept back in a pony-tail with a leather thong, and his somewhat flattened nose bespeaks his Sholin heritage. Well armed and well built, he tends to be an intimidating man with his carefully neutral facial expressions and far-away look.

Maui carries a double-bladed sword, five javelins in a quiver on his back, and two shortswords on his hips. He also has a small leather pack with a hammock-roll, a winter blanket, and six thunderstones. On land, he wears a chain shirt.

Background

The Sholin are a sea-going people with a deep affinity for the waters of Gaeleth. Maui grew up in a large family in the Sholin village of Tulish, and he was the third of six children. Maui's father, Auori, was a Kepori Sholin – one of the deep sea-going Sholin – that decided to retire to land when he lost one arm to sharks. Auori made a life for himself among the smaller Ashoi Sholin of Tulish, bringing in a vast wealth of experience and stories. Auori and his wife settled down to a good life, and Maui grew up with the stories of the deep sea, and the experience of the cliff-sides of Tulish on the southern side of the Gulf of Teras.

During the fearsome War of the Undead, Tulish was nearly overrun by undead. Only the skilled work of the village shaman, coupled with newfound allies from across the gulf, saved the tribe. Maui still lost one of his three brothers to the undead, but the rest of his family – and his village – survived. The newcomers brought with them wealth, trade, and protection in exchange for aid in building their strange ships, and the raw materials from around the village.

Maui's father found him a job on one of the transport cogs that ran back and forth between the foreign city of Teras, and Tulish. Maui spent several good years aboard various vessels, learning the foreign way of sailing, and combining it with both the Kepori and Ashoi Sholin ways of sailing. Maui made a good living, and earned a good reputation among the various vessels as a hard worker with good skills. It was aboard the Kristine that the young Sholin man ran into a bit of trouble that would change his life forever. A new ensign aboard the Kristine thought that the best way to run a crew was with a verbal whip, and he singled out Maui because of his size and the deference the crew paid him. Maui was unaffected by the ensign's words, and it angered the ensign considerably – as well as intimidating the officer. The ensign finally transferred his wrath to a deck hand of no more than thirteen years, but when Maui went to defend the lad, things got ugly. The skipper of the Kristine had to let Maui go in Teras, but because of the big Sholin's reputation and experience, the skipper gave him severance pay and a good recommendation.

It was then that Maui was hired aboard the Black Holly II, under the command of Captain Seamus Yarbus. Maui appointed himself the captain's bodyguard, and has worked hard to fulfill that roll ever since.

Maui's father and all his family were killed in 1328 when Tulish was destroyed by rogue Quitzara of Lul.

Character

Maui may be a big, intimidating man with his array of weapons, enormous hands and shoulders, and fierce look – but it's a deadly illusion. Underneath his callous ability to kill anyone, however, is a fiercely loyal teddy bear. Because of his Sholin upbringing, he abhors taking a man's pride, and so usually takes on the role of protector and guardian. Maui works out whenever he can, and can often be found stretching or working hard whenever there is a lul in the usual ship's activities. To truly rest, however, he studies the Book of Olorin, increasing his faith in the Sea Goddess and deepening his thoughts.

Maui speaks the Common tongue, Elven, and Sholin.
