Xavien de Lance

Character concept by Fred Feeley, all rights reserved.

Date of Birth: circa 1310 Avard.

Current Status: Summer, 1331 Avard. Xavien is one of Commodore Seamus' battlemages, and wherever his ship the Rattler II can be found, there he is, working either for the commodore or his Chief Marine, Angus Stonehelm.

Appearance

Xavien is a tall, lean man with brown hair, green eyes, and a light chocolate skin bespeaking a mixed heritage – probably from the Franaran desert tribes. His demeanor is calm and inquisitive, but when in action, he is demonically fast.

Xavien tends to wear leather armor, and carries a quarterstaff, with a light crossbow.

Background

Originally from one of the islands near the Franars, Xavien's parents immigrated to the nearby Empire of Vridara just before the War of the Undead broke out. Xavien was barely a year old when the hoardes of undead began to ravage the lands, and spent his formative years in a near-battlefield environment. Despite the rigors of his youth, he turned out well enough, picking up some of the ways of the warrior during the War of the Undead. After the battles were over with, and people began the onerous task of rebuilding, Xavien was apprenticed to a leather-worker named Shavitch Markonokova. Shavitch was with the adolescent the day his powers manifested, and a torn suit of armor was mended during an emergency. The old leather-worker – no fan of the Inquisition, and a sympathizer for the elves – undertook to hide the lad.

In the aftermath of Vridara's defeat by the Dragon Nation, an imperial officer named Vladimir Kushkin mutinied with most of the crew aboard a ship called the Scarlet Skies. The brigantine quickly advertised that it would take on all mages fleeing the returning Inquisition, and take them to a safe-haven in Rakore. Old Shavitch heard of the incident, and quickly paid for Xavien to be sent to the Scarlet Skies. Xavien left in the middle of the night, without ever saying good-bye to his parents. With only a handshake farewell for Shavitch, he embarked on a three-month long journey westward, towards the supposed safe-haven of Rakore.

Xavien spent the voyage learning from the other mages, and learning a bit about sailing as well. Eshir Anyalethelis, an older elf that had hidden deep in the Vridaran Forests, took the time to teach Xavien what he could of his sorcerous abilities. Xavien, it turned out, had demon blood running in his veins – and that was the source of his powers. The young lad also, it turned out, had an aptitude for battle magic.

Near the end of their voyage, they were (ironically enough) captured by pirates within Rakoran waters. The pirates undertook to use the magical crew to their own advantages, using bribes, threats, and even a murder to drive their 'ownership' home. Xavien managed to escape into the waters of a small cove the pirates put into, knowing that it could mean the death of Eshir and the others – but he had to find help, or find some way to destroy the pirates. During the night, as a storm raged about, help arrived in the form of a ship captain and his landing party. The landing party was armed and armored with arcane magic, divine faith, and natural talents beyond anything the pirates were prepared for. Even when Eshir was forced to turn his powers against the landing party, they prevailed. Xavien joined up with them, and the paladin within their group accepted him without a second thought.

The traumatic rescue of the mages, the destruction of the pirates, and ease with which Xavien fit into the group convinced the young battle mage that he had found his niche – particularly when the paladin and the ship captain asked him to stay on with them.

Character

Xavien is a young man full of drive, power, and knowledge – but little real world application. Though well-enough trained by his original mentor, Eshir, he has taken Captain Seamus on as his new combat role model. Curious and a bit nervous about all that is happening around him, he never-the-less has squared his shoulders and prepared to meet whatever may come, head on.

Xavien speaks both the Elven and Common tongues.
