The Kambringer was one of the first brigantines ever made by Gideon Enterprises, having been commissioned the Thracen in 1315. The captain of the Thracen lost her in a game of dice; she was found abandoned on the coast in 1321 with all hands lost; she was renamed the Innocent in 1324 after a refit; she was seized in 1326 for smuggling; and she was refitted in 1329 as the Fleet of Foot – just in time for the ogran invasion of Rakore in the War of the Four Winds. After the war, the Fleet of Foot was gifted to one of the Kur Maen defector officers, and he renamed her the Kambringer, right at the end of 1329. In late 1331, Captain Merrous Trende and his ship was assumed lost at sea.

Crew

Captain Merrous Trende: A slate man in his prime, with long flowing blonde hair, sun-tanned skin, and a muscular build, Merrous keeps himself in shape with calisthenics, swimming, and sword practice. He saw action as a paladin squire during the War of the Undead, and went on to become a sea-going captain for Kur Maeth, reaching the rank of leftenant in the Kur Maen fleet. During the War of the Four Winds, Merrous helped his crew mutiny against the captain of the Hammer of Justice, and went over to the Rakoran side. Merrous is a gregarious, intelligent, attractive man with a flair for the dramatic, and an ego nearly as large as his ship.

First Mate Ganton: A giant of an Alekdanian man at 6'8“ and 340lbs, Ganton is the largest member of any crew within a dozen ships. He was a gladiatorial slave in Kur Maeth, before the invasion by Nabrol, and the subsequent invasion by the Fourth Crusades. Mean and vicious to everyone but the captain, Ganton runs a tight ship, kept in check and in shape only by Merrous' will.

Officer Candice: She's a gorgeous slate woman with a long, thick braid of brown hair going to blonde in the sun. Candice hails from Rakore, where she learned the arts of sailing from her rich father, who purchased her commission. The Kambringer is her first service ship; though a novice, she believes in what she does, and longs to earn enough independently of her father to buy her own ship. In her spare time, she plays the bones, but will not gamble with the crew, as per sea-going tradition.

Officer Marl: He's an older Slate man in his late 50s with a weather beaten face. Somewhat short and spindly, he has a sailor's gait if ever there was one. Marl has been at sea most of his life, thinks no one is good enough to serve aboard any ship but him, and that only fate and the gods have kept him from being the captain over others. Despite his thick head and bitter attitude, he is probably one of the most experienced naval officers in all Rakore.

Officer Kaoio: He's a big Sholin man with thick shoulders and a fair gut from drinking. Kaoio is a novice at sailing wooden ships, but lived his whole life on the ocean with the Sholin with the Maotosh Clan. Having proven himself in battle against the Kur Maens, Kaoio was given a commission in the Rakoran merchant navies, and has spent the last year learning about wooden ships. He has proven an able seaman, and gives his loyalty whole-heartedly to Merrous – the only captain at the time that was willing to take him on as an officer, and train him. Kaoio spends as much time in the water as he can, or drinks when he can't.

Bosun Sweety: Sweety is a tiny slate woman in her later 30s with dark hair and eyes, and close-cropped hair. Despite her name and size, she is anything but sweet. Sweety grew up at sea and was even a pirate, before being caught and imprisoned on Hallis Island. During the ogran invasion, many prisoners were given a chance at freedom in exchange for near-suicidal war missions – and Sweety earned her freedom. She doesn't talk much about what she did, but several nasty scars beneath her clothes indicate just how perilously close she came to being killed. She runs a tight ship, and has no trouble putting a belaying pin to use on a lazy sailors' skull or ribs or knuckles. An able seaman, she anticipates the officers most of the time. Rumor aboard ship is that Ganton tried to lure her below decks for sex – and the first mate walked funny for a week, and the ship was short a belaying pin till her next port of call. In her spare time, Sweety smokes a wicked-looking pipe – carved from the bones of an ogre.

Cook Faldurst: He's a mountain dwarf with a braided beard he keeps out of the food, and a foul-mouthed temper. He stays below decks, keeping things clean and cooking while the ship is at sea. In port, he gets the most food for the silver, and the Kambringer is earning a reputation for setting a fine mess. Faldurst refuses to talk about his dwarven past, though the crew speculates that he's one of the few remaining Stonehelms.

Crew: The Kambringer has a crew of 14 sailors of varying experience and backgrounds. Most have only recently begun to sail under Captain Merrous, but the first mate's vicious streak and the bosun's belaying pin have turned them into an admirable crew in a short time. Like the bosun, several of them have prisoner backgrounds wherein they earned their freedom.

Design

The ship carries a 12ft tender capable of carrying four tonnes of cargo. The tender is usually stored upon the deck above the cargo hold, and must be moved out of place to allow cargo in or out.

The Kambringer has six compartments from fore to aft:

forepeak - bosun's equipment and stores, anchor chains, et cetera.

petty officer's mess - sleeping space for four officers.

seaman's mess - sleeping space for the crew and the location of the galley.

cargo - up to 25 tonnes.

wardroom - sleeping space for four officers, including the captain.

captain's mess - a subdivision of the wardroom.

afterpeak - mooring line, fender storage and gear.
