Califaxis are undead designed to serve as military support. Designed and employed by Demik Coruth during the battle of the undead, their sole purpose is to provide cover for traditional skeletons by firing missile weapons against opponents. After the death of Coruth, the information was widely disseminated; as well, many of the califaxis survived the battle of the undead, scattering to the winds at the command of their intelligent undead commanders.
They often wear whatever armor they can find, employing it as they had when they were living beings. Califaxis in rotting boiled leather armor or rusting chain mail are not uncommon.
Combat: The Califaxis sole purpose is to rake enemy troops with missile weapons. As such, they can utilize nearly any ranged weapon, from bows to crossbows, to slings and daggers. Traditionally, they are outfitted with light crossbows, for ease of use, range, and PO:C&T listings for armor class negations at closer ranges. If the ranged weapon is destroyed, these undead can still use their claws, twice per round, at 1d4 points of damage per strike.
It should be noted that missile weapons do only one point of damage per die, against these abominations, and slashing and piercing weapons do only half damage. As undead, they are also immune to mind attacks, illusions, poison, and spells like cold, death, hold, sleep, and so on. Holy water typically deals 2d4 ponts of damage per vial.
They turn as ghasts.
Habitat/Society: Califaxis are usually created to serve as guardians, either of other, more important undead, or as guardians for the living.
Ecology: As typical undead, they make no impact on the local ecology, though fauna tends to stay well aways from them.
