Each teleportation requires one third of the entire 117 gallon vat of sulfuric acid, no matter how much mass is transported; each single teleportation can move 150,000 tonnes. The mage must be able to cast third level spells to accomplish any use of the towers. He must inscribe the coordinates of what he is transporting, the coordinates of his destination, and the coordinates of the nearest three towers to the destination as reference. He must also be able to take into account relative motion, elevation, and spacial differences between the origination and destination transport sights. The exact placement of the runes of coordination, and the activation runes for the towers, are inscribed on the floor of the top level of each tower. By special manipulation, the teleport can consume all of the necessary sulfuric acid for three simultaneous loads (i.e. 450,000 tonnes).
Thus, an 8th level mage, with the proper instructions, could transport himself and his allies inside the tower, his pack horses and allies outside the tower, and several galleons far out at sea (scried with a crystal ball), to an inland lake that is fairly distant from any nearby towers. The jump would eat up one third of the acid in the vat.
Anyone wearing Karasenth bracers, and standing in the center of the topmost part of the tower automatically activates the teleportation sequence, taking the person wearing the bracer and anything or anyone near him to the nearest tower. The teleport still consumes a third of the vat of acid. The sequence of destinations is locked into the tower, itself; even if the nearest tower were destroyed, the person wearing the bracers would be teleported to where the top floor of the nearest tower had been.
The towers were apparently designed just before the first pass of the Shadow Star on Gaeleth, as an insurance policy against the day the planet itself would need to be moved. While the towers themselves are nowhere near powerful enough to move a planet, they are powerful enough to aid in orbital adjustments, such as those explosions that created the Sea of Kiriath and destroyed half of the continent of Nabrol.
