'Kävik' is Inuit for 'wolverine', according to Walt Morey's book Kävik: The Wolf Dog.
Khavik was, originally, my handle on the local BBS, The Enterprise. I came to know Vexpen, the SysOp of The Enterprise, and together we worked on the Deltan Federation BBS. The 'ä' symbol is hard as hell do deal with, when typing, so I used a regular 'a', and slid in an 'h', on emphasize the softness of that 'a'. The Deltan Federation eventually was abandoned, as the Internet and the World Wide Web became more and more prevalent. I vaguely recall the last couple of times I logged into the DF, on one of those new, ultra-fast 14.4k bps modems. Brings back memories of Solar Realms Elite (SRE) games, and chats with people who had trouble spelling 'tongue'. Later, when I found out about talkers on the 'Net, such as the Foothills, I kept using the handle of Khavik. I've logged into the Tower, Theatre des Vampires, Kama Sutra, the 'Burbs, the City, Refuge, and Midnight Blue, as well, under that name. As an active role-player, I often describe my World Wide Web alter-ego as a midieval throw-back, running about in the arms and armor of the time, and utilizing virtual magic. Somewhere, along the way, I picked up an attrocious typed accent, and can use it somewhat fluently, now, bad as it is.
An example: And, to update things -- since there were a zillion and one 'Khaviks' at Hotmail and Geocities, I had to add something to it. Hence, 'Khavikanum', pronounced KAH-vi-KON-um. |
