Malest Darvel was an assassin and mage in the employ of Duke Cornwall Vist, during the Five Nations War in 554 Avard. Malest was well feared by the other four nations engaged in the conflict, but he was most feared by his own people. Duke Cornwall Vist put the assassin to use many times against upstarts, rebels, and outspoken complainers against his rule. Duke Cornwall finally fell in 559 Avard, ending the Five Nations War. A peasant army, led by a priestess of Rahne, hung the dangerous assassin later in the same year. Malest's most useful magical item, a ring that allowed him to take on various visages, was buried with him. Observant grave robbers later stole the ring from the corpse's finger, and the ring went through various underworld users until the Inquisition caught it in 1025 Avard. It was placed in a Cache Vault for magical items, but the Vault was plundered during the War of the Undead, and its current owner is unknown.
The ring is made of platinum, with twelve command words etched in Karatikan on its surface. Upon speaking any of the command words, a preprogrammed illusion appears around the wearer of the ring. The illusion is complete, down to the level of smell, vision, sound, and even taste, although there is no touch-component. The wearer of the ring will see himself as normal, when the ring's illusions are active, and therefore must rely on others to inform him of the command word's effect. One command word may be used per day, and the illusion lasts for ten hours (10h), after which time the illusion will abrubtly end. The illusion can also end by simply removing the ring. Only true-sight (and the sense of touch) can transcend the illusion, once it is active. The ring is sensitive to the wearer's gender, and its effects occur instantly when the command words are spoken.
