Sun Rings

The War of the Undead lasted for four years -- four long, miserable years during with the dead rose from their graves, and evil spirits began to own the night.

The Church of Arpelos had been dedicated to stamping out the undead for centuries prior to the breakout of the war, but really only flowered as the war flowered. Just as concerned with the 'everyman' as with 'the big picture', the Church of Arpelos made sure that special items were available to the militias and reeves of many villages, to help protect them from the undead and give them a fighting chance.

Each set of 'rings' was actually four rings welded together, with a different blessing and power bestowed upon each ring. The four powers together gave the reeves and the militias a chance against the ruinous numbers of the undead, as the villages and towns of the lands pulled closer and closer together within their walls. Brave individuals who roamed the land outside the walls of the villages were awarded with Sun Rings when possible. In all, some thousands of the Sun Rings were made -- and continue to be made.

Each set of Sun Rings is cast from bronze or iron, or in rare cases, from good steel. The four welded rings allow the wearer to detect undead* within 60 feet of the wearer, by glowing a golden color like sunlight. The rings also removed fear from the wearer; this allows whomever wears it to help rally those around them, and be an anchor in the stormy seas of the War of the Undead. These abilities operated continuously, and unconsciously for the wearer. When used against the undead, the bare rings dealt damage as a magic weapon.

* All spells indicated above as per d20 v3.5 system.

Once per day, after each dawn, the rings have another gift from the followers of Arpelos: they can summon enough life energy to cure light wounds -- or deal damage to the undead.

The Sun Rings, gifts of the Church of Arpelos, are treasured items by many travelers and many reeves. Many part with the Sun Rings only in death, despite their massed production by the church.

Rumors of more powerful Sun Rings made for the more martial members of the church appear unfounded, as they tend to prefer two-handed swords, maces, and other more conventional weapons.

The estimated monetary value of one set of brass Sun Rings is almost 4,000 gold pieces. The inside, palm-side of each set of welded rings bears the symbol of Arpelos, the symbol of the temple in which the rings were made, the symbol of the priest responsible for the creation of the rings, and the date of the rings' blessing.
