A bishop is a priest that oversees more than one temple for his god. Few bishops are pantheonic, as most are dedicated to specific deities. A bishop may be a former vicar of a particular temple, appointed to head all of the temples within a region. In some cases, a bishop is promoted out of the ranks from travelling deacon, and in some cases, even from the state of paladin. Bishops are bureaucratic officials, and while they may have a temple of their own headed by a vicar of their own choosing, their primary calling is to their entire bishopric. Some bishops who prove able administrators are promoted to the rank of archbishop, where they may support and administer several bishops for their deity.
