Mistrae

The mistrae were one of the more common foot soldiers of the necromancers during the War of the Undead. Necromantic soldiers often relied on the remnants of the dead for building materials, and no building material was more abundant than the shells and exoskeletons of dead insects. The necromancers of the war could use one dead insect to find another insect, dead or alive, and add to itself. The mistrae could form humanoid shapes, or become amoebic and slip through any crack small enough for the largest of the insectoid exoskeletons.

The mistrae would often attack people by engulfing them, and then having all the jaws of all the insects they were made from strip the flesh from the person, leaving only a gaunt skeletal frame ready for necromantic incantations. In some cases, mistrae were trained to strip a person to within a hairsbreadth of death, cauterizing bleeding wounds with acid or necromantic energies. In such cases, the person might still possess a brain and heart and lungs, even their eyes and many other neural tissues – and nothing else besides.
