Sammeth Knar

Character concept by Todd Antill, all rights reserved.

Date of Birth: Vor the 15th of 1301 Avard.

Current Status: Summer, 1331 Avard. Sammeth was hailed as a hero during the War of the Four Winds for helping to lead the town of Takanal to safety when it was being besieged by both Nabrolians and ograns. Sammeth helped clear the Deepsmith ruins of Daggoneth, and received a sizeable portion of wealth for his troubles – but the call of adventure still runs strong in him. Sammeth can often be found about the wilds of Rakore exploring, or resting in between adventures in Takanal, Rilan, or Kashin.

Appearance

Sammeth’s skin is sun tanned and weathered from his constant exposure to the sun. He towers over most other Rakorans (from his mother’s side, the Altharans were known being tall) at six feet and almost four inches. While he sports a lean build, he is muscular and very agile. Most enemies mistake him for being awkward and gangly only to be taught a harsh lesson by his fast stride and long reach. Sammeth wears his hair short, almost shaved to the skin. His hair is auburn and his eyes are dark green and surrounded by weathered lines that make his age hard to guess.

Sammeth tends to wear an elven buckler along his left forearm, and his left arm is heavily leather padded for his falcon. He also wears the items noted below:

ring of feather fall: crafted from the talons of three falcons, this ring is carved with falcons in flight, with the spaces in between filled with feathers. The ring was found on a corpse near Firland, just south of the Panthera River; because the ring was muddy and appeared to be made of horn, its value was overlooked by whomever killed the original bearer.

ghost-touched rapier: made of fine elven steel, it is chased with silver phantoms all along the length of the blade. The guards and the hilt are chased with phantoms, and no matter how the silver is polished, it quickly turns to tarnish, setting off an eerie contrast with the steel. Several of the phantoms have enough detail to show that they are elven spirits. The blade was found in the ruins of Shivastaenel, near Bridgehammer's Tomb.

mithral shirt: found in Bridgehammer's Tomb, what was a full-length shirt and skirt for a dwarf made an acceptable shirt for Sammeth. The links are all a masculine, hexagonal design, chased with silver; the borders of the shirt are heavier links with silver runes on them. The shirt was magical at one time, but the enchantments were disjuncted, though by what is unknown.

handy haversack: made of dark, heavy leathers, the borders of the pack are edged with leaves in a full riot of autumn colors. The pack engenders a -5 penalty to anyone searching for it in foilage of any kind. Sammeth found the pack in an elven ruin somewhat east and north of Teras near the marshes.

cloak of comfort: a calf-length cloak in charcoal gray, it's edges are chased with black satin. The cloak was found in an abandoned settlement outpost deep in the Rakoran Forests, where a black bear had used it for many years. The locals said the bear was immortal, and it had received wounds that should have killed it, and lived well past the time when a bear should have died of old age. The bear was silver-gray and as large as a brown bear when Sammeth killed it. When slept in, the cloak triples the rate of natural healing, and presumably grants its wearer a longer life.

ring of protection +4: this ring was named Sres'Haras by Tylanion of the House of Elm, and perhaps came from the horde of Killashandrastatia. It was found in a vellum envelope with Sres'Haras' name on it in the ruins of Tymarell, in a secret compartment in a hidden room. The ring is a plain platinum band, but when it protects the bearer, a faint blue field of blue reacts to attacks as though it were alive.

ring of counsterspells (polymorphs): this ring was named Shirasses by Tylanion of the House of Elm, and perhaps came from the horde of Killashandrastatia. It was found in a vellum envelope with Shirasses' name on it in the ruins of Tymarell, in a secret compartment in a hidden room. The ring is made of a very wide band that takes up most of the large finger joint of a woman's hand, made of faces that change in a circle from elven to monstrous and back. The ring is permanently set and always functions to counter polymorphs of any kind.

ring of wizardry I: this ring was named Hras'esrases by Tylanion of the House of Elm, and perhaps came from the horde of Killashandrastatia. It was found in a vellum envelope with Hras'esrases' name on it in the ruins of Tymarell, in a secret compartment in a hidden room. The ring is made made of silver, and encrusted with faceted black diamonds.

Background

Sammeth grew up on the Knar Estates is Rilan among the expansive estates of his family’s animal training grounds. His natural affinity for animals and nature was nurtured from a young age and he has honed this gift throughout his adult life. During the War of Undead, Sammeth signed up to train with the Rakoran Rangers. The Rakoran Rangers were well known for hunting down and slaying roving bands of undead that threatened outlying settlements and the flanks of the Rakoran armies and Sammeth excelled while he served with these dedicated warriors. When the War of the Undead ended, Sammeth found that he did not want to return to his familial estates and take up the family business. During the war Sammeth had developed a passion for roaming through trackless forests and down forgotten trails. He also came to enjoy the exploration of ancient ruins and mystic locales. To make money, Sammeth sometimes hires himself out as a guide and will lead curious young nobles or adventurous types into the wilds. To date he has yet to lose anyone under his charge and is quickly becoming well-known in Rilan and the surrounding area.

Character

Sammeth loves the rough edges of nature, but he also enjoys the comforts that only money can buy. Sammeth has been known to make a fortune in coins, only to blow it all on a luxurious weekend of wine, women and song. He is quick to laugh, but quicker to anger. While he is a free spirit, he does have streak of good in his heart. He appreciates natural beauty and purity and respects the raw and untamed aspects of nature.

Sammeth speaks, reads, and writes both Common and Elven.

Animal Companion

Silverwing is a Rakoran 'Autumn Falcon', one of a special breed of falcons bred by the Knar family for several generations. Like her original Rakoran falcon stock, she is a larger falcon with woodland brown and gray plumage and a silvery-gray underside, including the undersides of the wings. Silverwing has been taught two purposes: hunting (with the tricks attack, down, fetch, heel, seek, and track), and performing (with the tricks come, fetch, heel, perform, and stay). Silverwing's performances are for distractions or camouflaging herself. She is also mentally linked to Sammeth, such that the two seemingly understand one another's gestures and emotions.
