The Ray of Arpelos was commissioned in 1325 by the Chosen of Arpelos, Garalus. The keel was laid later in that same year at Thayer's Rock in Rakore, and she was launched in 1327 Avard. From the beginning, the Church of Arpelos contributed significantly to the ships construction, despite a long-running animosity with the nation of Rakore. Despite national differences, the shipbuilders and priests involved in the project knew that the Ray of Arpelos would help everyone in the region.
The ship was designed as an undead killer. The keel was blessed against the undead, the decks are holy ground, the ballistae fire bolts that are divinely blessed, and there are four special ballistae that fire bolts of sunlight that can hole a ship on the horizon. This last feature terrified the naval commanders in Rakore, who almost scuttled the project a dozen times. Only direct interference from the crown in Rakore kept the construction going, and a plaque was installed on the pilot's housing that read:

May the undead whither under Arpelos' might,
May the living fear nothing from Arpelos' sight.

The Crew

The crew of the Ray of Arpelos switches out somewhat regularly, as they tend to be priests of the Church of Arpelos from various regions. Most tours on the ship last only four to six months, and much of the time the ship is moored in Kur Maeth where it receives continued blessings and maintenance. Whenever the ship is sent to sea, Rakoran naval experts often know when and where very quickly.
