Campaign IX, Chapter 11, Episode 21

Closing the Barn

Location: In the forests south-southeast of Mount Lavanor

Date: Summer, 1333 Avard

Characters: Este, Halite, Nalani, Galadriel, Isaac, Xydeco

After defeating a carrion crawler, the team examined two smaller buildings that the tunnels of silk led to. Inside the buildings, whose insides were covered in silk, the team found bones. Bones were piled up in the rafters, in the corners, even on the floor under the silk. Xydeco even found a human skull. All the bones, including the skull, had gnaw marks – and rasp marks, from where the carrion crawlers' tentacles had peeled the meat and soft tissue off the bones. The inside of the skull had rasp marks, nearly making Galadriel wretch. The second building held the bones (and the skull) of a hill giant and a brown bear. While the team had dealt with a carrion crawler, there was concern about the adult chuul. Inside the barn, the team found five of the larval chuul. The doors were still functional, though webbed up with silk, and so a heroic battle began to close the doors and keep the crawlers inside – even as the team heard sounds of struggling people or animals webbed up inside. Galadriel used a massive burst of thunder to blast back the crawlers, and Este tossed down his enchanted spear from the gnomish ruins. Nalani fumbled the catch, scarring her hands on the spear, but managed to get the haft in place as a bar to hold the doors of the barn closed. In the distance, real thunder pealed as a storm moved closer.

DM's Notes: Saige did an awesome job of knocking back the carrion crawlers, but was still disillusioned with Galadriel. Gwen, too, was not her style, though she thought a fighter would have been fun. The fighter/wizard wasn't as much fun as she'd wanted, either. I spent a hunk of time after the game working with her to make a decent battlemage (5th level warlock with melee weapon bent and decent armor and constitution), so we'll see how that goes during the next session. In the meantime, I like how the party's coming together a little better. Of course, Sommer botched a roll (critical 1's) and wound up wrapped up in silk blocking the door while everyone tried to close them. She was not happy with my gleeful expression, for critical 1's happen so rarely.
